Fumagillin was originally used against microsporidial parasites Nosema apis
and Nosema ceranae infections in honey bees.Fumagillin is also investigated as an inhibitor of malaria parasite
growth.Fumagillin has been used in
the treatment of microsporidiosis.Fumagillin
is also an amebicide.Fumagillin can
obstruct blood vessel formation by binding to an enzyme called methionine
aminopeptidase 2.As a result, the compound, together with semisynthetic
derivatives,are investigated as a angiogenesis inhibitor in the treatment of
cancer.
